Investors who put $1,000 into XRP on the day of Ripple's significant court victory against the SEC have seen their holdings grow to around $1,358. On July 13, 2023, just after the ruling, XRP traded at $0.81. By the time of this report, the price reached $1.11, marking a 35% increase since that landmark moment.
How the Court Decision Shaped XRP’s Legal Status
Ripple’s breakthrough came when U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres ruled partially in their favor in the SEC lawsuit. The judge found that when XRP is sold on public crypto exchanges to retail investors, it does not qualify as a securities offering under the Howey test. This decision brought needed legal clarity for XRP trading in secondary markets.
On the flip side, the court ruled that Ripple’s direct sales of XRP to institutional investors were unregistered securities offerings. This split verdict meant neither side won entirely. Importantly, Judge Torres stated XRP is not inherently a security but depends on how it’s sold. also XRP distributions to employees and developers were ruled not to be securities transactions.
The SEC’s lawsuit filed in December 2020 accused Ripple, CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and co-founder Chris Larsen of raising $1.3 billion through these unregistered offerings. The 2023 ruling led to a remedies phase where Ripple was fined $125 million, far less than the $2 billion penalty the SEC sought. Both parties dropped appeals in 2025, confirming the court’s main findings.
XRP’s Market Reaction to the Legal Battle
Despite the positive ruling, XRP didn’t skyrocket as some anticipated. Much of the victory’s impact was already reflected in price jumps following the July 2023 decision and again when the SEC dropped its appeal. After that, XRP’s price gains flattened out, moving in line with network growth, adoption, and overall market trends rather than legal news.
The token spiked as several exchanges relisted XRP and regulatory fears eased. Still, these rallies were frequently met with profit-taking and market corrections, keeping XRP’s trading range fairly stable instead of leading to a sustained upward surge.
