David Schwartz, the chief architect of the XRP Ledger who retired on January 1, 2026, has publicly named the single condition that would make him reconsider. Not money. Not the size of the project. Just one person: Nik Bougalis.

"The one thing that could almost make me think seriously about unretiring would be getting to work with @nbougalis again," Schwartz posted on July 23, 2026, under his longtime handle @JoelKatz. The comment is brief, but for anyone who knows the history of Ripple's engineering core, it lands with some weight.

Who is Nik Bougalis and why does it matter

Bougalis joined Ripple as its eighth employee, which puts him in the room when the company was still figuring out what the XRPL would even look like. He spent close to a decade leading the engineering team that built the ledger's core code from scratch, and he holds three patents in advanced cryptography that became structural parts of the network as it exists today. In Ripple circles, he is something of a founding-era figure.

The reunion Schwartz hints at is, at minimum, complicated. Bougalis left Ripple back in 2022, and by late 2025 he had moved to a competing ecosystem entirely, taking the CTO role at the Algorand Foundation. Schwartz, meanwhile, stepped back after 13 years of continuous work, though he still advises the company as CTO Emeritus and contributed to the XRPL 3.2.0 release in June 2026.

Irony with a serious edge

This is not Schwartz's first public quip since leaving the operational seat. Back in January, he joked that XRP's 20% price jump happened specifically because he retired. That one was clearly tongue-in-cheek. The Bougalis comment reads differently: it is framed as a hypothetical, but it is also a rare, direct acknowledgment of professional respect from someone who has spent over a decade at the center of one of crypto's most contentious ecosystems.
