Pi Coin jumped 8% on Saturday, climbing to $0.087. This surge pushed it onto CoinGecko’s trending list, standing out as many other cryptocurrencies were dipping. The timing is notable node operators for Pi Network have until August 11 to install a critical update, or risk being cut off from the system.
Nodes play a key role in validating transactions on Pi’s blockchain, and this update, known as Protocol 26, is a cornerstone for improved security and interoperability with other blockchains. Pi’s development team has been steadily rolling out upgrades, with Protocol 26 marking one of the final big steps before the ultimate update, Protocol 27. The changes include enhanced smart contract safety and better data management.
Despite the recent price rise, Pi Coin’s broader trend remains challenging. The token is still 25% lower than a month ago and nearly 80% down from its peak a year back. Trading volumes on Pi remain modest, hovering around $8.6 million in a 24-hour period. A key factor holding the price back is the influx of new tokens. Data shows over 1.7 billion Pi coins are set to unlock within the next year, saturating a market with relatively low daily liquidity.
Past upgrade events have triggered similar price spikes that quickly faded. For example, before the July 22 Protocol 25 rollout, Pi surged 24% but retreated after the update went live. Historically, these rallies have failed to sustain momentum. The network’s approach of consensus through small trusted groups, inspired by Stellar, remains technically interesting, but the market is cautious.
Only node operators need to worry about the update deadline; miners using the mobile app are unaffected. The Pi team provides detailed instructions for nodes to upgrade, aiming for a smooth transition. Yet the looming deadline adds pressure for node operators to act swiftly or face disconnection from the network.
