Pavel Durov wants to turn Telegram's billion-strong user base into a crypto audience, and he is not being subtle about it. Speaking publicly, the messaging app's founder said he intends to give every Telegram user a built-in crypto wallet, essentially wiring digital asset infrastructure directly into the platform most of those people already use every day.
What Durov actually said
The plan, as Durov described it, is straightforward: a native wallet embedded inside Telegram, accessible to anyone with an account. No separate app, no onboarding maze. The wallet would sit alongside chats, channels and bots that hundreds of millions of people already interact with. Telegram's existing crypto product, TON Space, is already live for users in supported regions, built on The Open Network blockchain that the company helped seed years ago. GRAM, the token tied to that ecosystem, was trading around $1.50 at the time of the announcement.
Telegram has roughly one billion registered accounts. For context, that is larger than the entire current global crypto user base by most estimates, which puts somewhere between 400 and 600 million people having ever touched a digital asset. Durov is effectively proposing to double that number overnight, at least on paper.
How the crypto world is reacting
Reaction in the industry split fast. Optimists point out that distribution has always been crypto's hardest problem, and Telegram already solved it. The app is the default communication tool for crypto communities, trading groups and Web3 projects globally. Plugging a wallet into that existing behavior, rather than asking users to find a separate product, removes the biggest friction point in onboarding.
Skeptics are less convinced. Regulatory pressure on Telegram has been intense: Durov himself was detained in France in 2024 and faced charges related to content moderation on the platform. Launching a financial product across dozens of jurisdictions while that legal cloud lingers is not a small ask. Several compliance analysts noted that a wallet at this scale would immediately attract scrutiny from financial regulators in the EU, US and beyond, each with their own licensing requirements.
There is also the question of whether users actually want this. Telegram's growth was built on privacy and speed, not finance. Embedding a wallet changes what the app is, and not every user will welcome that shift.
