Nuclear energy is getting a fresh jolt from the crypto venture world. Paradigm, known primarily for its deep ties to the crypto ecosystem, has led a $470 million funding round in Antares Nuclear, a startup focused on small modular reactors (SMRs) tailored for military use. This move signals Paradigm’s growing appetite to invest beyond blockchain into emerging technologies key for national security and energy innovation.

Big Bet on Small Reactors

Antares Nuclear aims to switch on its first electricity-producing SMR as early as next year, but the long game targets U.S. military bases by 2028. The company is among three finalists in a Pentagon program assessing SMRs at Air Force facilities. These compact nuclear reactors promise a reliable, low-carbon power source ideal for remote or energy-intensive military operations, aligning with growing demand for resilient energy infrastructure.

Paradigm’s Expanding Frontier Focus

Paradigm’s $470 million infusion includes $370 million equity and $100 million debt, co-led by Caffeinated Capital with backing from Industrious Ventures, Point72 Ventures, and Shine Capital. The round comes weeks after Paradigm closed a substantial $1.2 billion fund aimed at supporting crypto while simultaneously diving into AI, robotics, aerospace, and manufacturing startups. The firm’s co-founder Matt Huang and managing partner Alana Palmedo have emphasized backing ventures that integrate with software and hardware innovations alongside crypto initiatives.

Antares adds to Paradigm’s growing portfolio of frontier technologies, reflecting increased investor interest in reliable power solutions as AI infrastructure and electrification surge. The startup’s military focus differentiates it in a crowded nuclear innovation space, underscoring the strategic value of SMRs not just for civilian grids but defense applications. Paradigm’s bets outside blockchain underline a broad vision that marries digital asset expertise with real-world tech challenges.
