Cryptocurrency ownership in Canada has jumped dramatically, with one quarter of the population holding digital assets in 2026, up from just 10% three years earlier. This rapid growth reflects a significant cultural shift in how Canadians approach saving and investing.
The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) conducted a survey from December 2025 to January 2026 involving 2,360 adults across the country. The research shows that nearly 60% of Canadians are now aware of cryptocurrencies, signaling widespread recognition beyond niche circles. Despite this surge, many users still misunderstand the protections and regulations governing crypto platforms.
Rising Interest Meets Limited Understanding
About half of crypto holders say they verify whether platforms are officially registered before investing, indicating increased caution. Yet, gaps remain in knowledge concerning insurance coverage and the technical security of their digital assets. The OSC is updating its regulatory approach to better safeguard investors while supporting market growth. This comes as the Canadian crypto landscape braces for more federal oversight, potentially reshaping how the industry evolves.
With 25% ownership, Canada’s crypto adoption mirrors trends seen in the United States, suggesting North American markets are converging in their embrace of digital finance. However, the discrepancy between awareness and true understanding raises questions about the risks for new investors diving into the market. Ongoing education and clearer regulations could be key as interest continues to rise.
