Crypto ownership in Canada has jumped sharply, reaching 25% of the population, according to a recent survey by the Ontario Securities Commission. This marks a significant rise from just 10% in 2023 and 13% in 2022, reflecting how digital assets have moved well beyond niche interests into everyday portfolios.

Growth Beyond Speculation

The survey reveals that nearly 39% of Canadian investors now hold some form of crypto product, indicating growing mainstream acceptance. Awareness is also climbing, with 59% able to correctly identify crypto assets, up from 54% last year. But confusion remains, particularly regarding regulation and investor protections.

More Canadians are using crypto for real transactions, not just speculation. Among crypto owners, 74% have actively used their digital assets. Stablecoin holders are even more engaged, with 89% using theirs and 20% employing stablecoins for international money transfers.

Why Canadians Invest in Crypto

Diversification leads the reasons why Canadians buy crypto, cited by 28% of respondents, followed by a long-term belief in the technology. Coinbase’s Canadian director, Eric Richmond, notes that the platform sees more crypto trading than any other in Canada, underscoring how digital assets have firmly entered the financial mainstream.
