On July 23, Strategy announced the Bitcoin Security Consortium, a nine-member group that has pledged $15 million over three years to fund security research for the Bitcoin network, with quantum-computing preparedness listed as its first priority.
The founding lineup reads like a roll call of institutional Bitcoin: Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets and Galaxy Digital joined Strategy in signing on. Between them the members span almost every corner of the market. BlackRock, Fidelity and ARK Invest all issue spot Bitcoin ETFs; Anchorage Digital and Coinbase handle custody; Block, Blockstream and Galaxy run infrastructure and financial-product businesses.
The $15 million will not sit in a central pot. Each founding member picks its own grantees, backing the developers, researchers and organizations it considers most worthy. The consortium provides a coordination layer, not a treasury.
Who runs the day-to-day
Brink Executive Director Mike Schmidt will handle daily operations on a volunteer basis, taking no compensation from any consortium member. He was quick to address the obvious independence question: "I continue to run Brink, independent of any Consortium member. I've committed to a year in this role, maybe I'd do two, but ultimately I see it as a seat that should rotate to other participants over time. My commitment is to Bitcoin, and that doesn't change."
Schmidt's framing matters. Brink is one of the main nonprofits funding Bitcoin core developers, so his role effectively links the consortium's institutional money to existing grassroots research pipelines rather than creating a parallel structure.
Quantum readiness is the stated opening focus, even though the timeline for quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin's cryptography remains deeply uncertain across the research community. The consortium is treating it as a long-lead problem worth addressing now, before it becomes urgent.
