Nexo has committed to full compliance with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCAR) regulation ahead of its enforcement deadline by joining forces with two German companies that already possess MiCAR licenses. This strategic move helps Nexo avoid the lengthy licensing process while ensuring its cryptocurrency custody and brokerage services meet Europe's strict regulatory standards.

Partnering with Specialists to Meet Complex MiCAR Requirements

Instead of applying for its own MiCAR licenses, Nexo chose to collaborate with Tangany and DLT Finance, two German firms licensed under MiCAR. Tangany will handle custody services, securing client crypto assets under the framework’s mandated standards for regulated custodians. Meanwhile, DLT Finance will be responsible for executing and mediating brokerage transactions for Nexo’s European customers. This split acknowledges the regulatory distinction between custody and brokerage activities, each demanding dedicated licensing and operational controls.

Strategic Implications for Nexo and the Broader Crypto Industry

Germany’s reputation for rigorous crypto regulation makes it a reliable partner location within the European Economic Area (EEA). By leveraging these partnerships, Nexo not only strengthens its operational compliance but also signals a broader industry trend. Many crypto platforms now face a choice: invest significant time and resources in direct licensing or align with existing players who have cleared regulatory hurdles. This approach allows quicker market access while meeting MiCAR’s full rules, which are rapidly transforming the European crypto landscape.

This move comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny across Europe and globally, as seen in separate policy discussions on blockchain applications and crypto regulation. Nexo’s calculated decision to operate with licensed specialists may well serve as a model for others navigating evolving compliance demands.
