Two U.S. senators recently introduced a bill to fast-track quantum sensor projects for the Pentagon, setting a September 2028 deadline for deployment. This push spotlights a looming challenge for blockchain networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum, whose public-key cryptography could one day fall prey to quantum computing advances.
Accelerating Quantum Tech in Defense
The National Quantum Readiness Act, put forward by Sens. Mike Rounds and Richard Blumenthal, mandates the Defense Department to prioritize at least three quantum sensor projects within two months of the bill’s approval. This effort joins forces with the Commerce and Energy departments and the National Science Foundation, engaging private quantum firms to bolster national technology leadership.
Quantum Threats to Crypto Encryption
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies rely heavily on complex mathematical problems to secure transactions. Today’s classical computers and early-stage quantum machines can't crack these encryptions. However, the bill arrives amid growing concerns that future quantum computers, with far superior processing power, might unravel these defenses. The potential fallout: digital asset security could become vulnerable, forcing the crypto ecosystem to adapt or overhaul its cryptographic foundations.
Unlike some regulations aimed directly at crypto networks, this legislation doesn't demand immediate changes to blockchain security protocols. Still, it signals a broader government acknowledgment of quantum computing’s disruptive potential. Investors and developers eyes remain fixed on how the industry will brace for what experts call the “quantum race.”
