The Pentagon is preparing to hand over the reins of the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine to NATO allies, marking a shift in military leadership amid Washington’s plans to reduce its footprint in Europe. This transition is expected to take place throughout the next year.
Established in November 2022 in Wiesbaden, Germany, SAG-U has coordinated over $60 billion in US defense aid to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion escalated into a prolonged conflict. Lt. Gen. Curtis Buzzard, the current commander, will step down as NATO assumes operational control under its NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) command. NSATU, launched after the July 2024 Washington Summit, already includes around 700 personnel from more than 28 member nations ready to fill the gap left by the US.
Crypto Donations Grow as an Unconventional Aid Channel
Alongside traditional military aid, Ukraine has tapped into cryptocurrency donations, receiving over $212 million mainly in Bitcoin and Ethereum since early 2022. While this sum doesn’t match the scale of US aid $212 million is less than a single month’s US security assistance the crypto channel holds unique advantages. It enables rapid transfers without the need for diplomatic negotiations and remains operable even when banking systems falter or are inaccessible.
Ukraine’s early embrace of crypto donations during active conflict stands out globally. Unlike traditional funding, these blockchain-based contributions offer transparency and speed, key in wartime. these contributions have overwhelmingly supported Ukrainian causes, contrasting with the scarcity of crypto aid for pro-Russian groups.
