The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has formally endorsed the Clarity Act, marking a significant boost for the crypto bill now under consideration by U.S. lawmakers. On Friday, the FOP, representing a large community of law enforcement officers, issued a statement supporting the latest draft of the legislation. This comes amid ongoing debates around regulatory clarity for digital assets.
Addressed specifically to Senators Elizabeth Warren and Timothy Eugene Scott, the FOP praised the bill's provisions designed to empower state and local law enforcement. The updated draft notably includes restrictions preventing officials and their families from issuing or promoting cryptocurrencies, a point of contention for some opposition lawmakers.
In their statement, the FOP emphasized the bill's consumer protection measures, which aim to help authorities tackle fraud, financial crimes, and improve coordination with federal agencies. The legislation also introduces compliance mandates related to anti-money laundering and sanctions within the digital asset ecosystem, targeting vulnerabilities like fraud around crypto kiosks.
The Clarity Act seeks to establish a full federal framework for regulating digital assets, a move welcomed by several industry groups. On the same day, the Crypto Council for Innovation, Blockchain Association, and the Digital Chamber also voiced their support, highlighting the urgency of protecting the growing number of Americans involved in cryptocurrency.
Despite bipartisan support last year, the bill has faced hurdles, particularly from banking executives concerned about stablecoins and the yields their customers could earn through crypto products. In January, Coinbase, America's largest crypto exchange, withdrew its backing following disagreements over stablecoin yield restrictions, underscoring ongoing tensions between crypto firms and traditional banks.
The latest draft reportedly addresses some of these concerns and is expected to move to a floor vote soon, potentially paving the way for clearer rules shaping the digital asset market.
Market reaction to the renewed momentum for the Clarity Act remains cautious as stakeholders await further developments.
