MoonPay launched Paybox on July 23, a wallet tool that plugs directly into AI agents like ChatGPT and Claude and gives them something they've never reliably had: the ability to complete a real purchase on your behalf.
What Paybox does and how it's built
The setup is straightforward. You connect Paybox to an AI agent, fund it via a bank account or crypto assets, then type a plain-language command. "Book me a flight to Tokyo next Thursday" stops being a chatbot suggestion and becomes an executed transaction. Supported merchants already include Amazon, flight bookings through Brij, and restaurant reservations via Resy.
Under the hood, Paybox runs on the x402 protocol, an open decentralized standard designed to work across different merchants and AI systems without locking users into a single ecosystem. Users can set spending caps, require approval notifications for individual purchases, and revoke access at any time. Authentication runs on passkeys, so no passwords are shared between you and your AI assistant. MoonPay does not act as a custodian: the company holds neither your funds nor control over how they move.
Neeraj Prasad, Chief Engineer of MoonPay Labs, put the problem plainly. Consumers could already ask AI agents to compare prices and explore options. Closing the gap between "here are your choices" and actually clicking buy is exactly what Paybox targets.
Where MoonPay sits in a crowded field
Robinhood and Coinbase have both been building in the AI-plus-payments space, but both lean toward closed-loop systems where transactions stay inside their own platforms. MoonPay is taking the opposite bet: an open protocol that can, in theory, work with any merchant or AI agent that supports the standard.
The product didn't appear out of nowhere. MoonPay acquired Dawn Labs on May 11, 2026, which brought Prasad and his AI engineering team aboard. Before that, in February 2026, the company had already shipped tools letting AI agents manage wallets and execute transfers, which turned out to be the groundwork for Paybox.
