MoonPay has unveiled PayBox, a new payment vault that lets users handle crypto trades, DeFi moves, and online purchases by simply chatting with AI assistants like ChatGPT or Claude. This tool allows natural language commands to trigger a variety of transactions, all controlled by user-set permissions and secured through passkeys.

Connecting PayBox to either AI platform happens through a custom connector. Once linked, users describe what they want to do in plain language. The AI assistant researches the options, prepares the transaction, and executes it only after receiving the required approvals. Supported actions range from buying crypto with fiat, swapping tokens, bridging assets across blockchains, to booking flights and making restaurant reservations.

Security and Permissions Tailored to Users

PayBox offers two permission modes. With Always Ask, every transaction needs passkey approval. Autonomous mode grants the AI some freedom to act within spending limits and rules set by the user. Changing any permissions demands a fresh passkey authorization. Each approval is single-use and expires immediately after the transaction, preventing misuse.

The system supports Solana and multiple EVM-compatible networks like Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, and others. It also integrates with x402, an open standard allowing AI agents to pay at services that accept agent-initiated transactions. MoonPay highlighted initial partners in travel, dining, and major online retail sectors.

Security is a priority. Wallet keys are split using multiparty computation and stored across secure hardware, ensuring neither MoonPay nor the AI can unilaterally access or spend funds. For card payments, Visa’s agentic commerce protocol enables the AI to transact without ever seeing or saving the card number. This tech comes courtesy of Sodot, a key management firm MoonPay acquired earlier in 2026, which already secures $50 billion in assets across over 10 million wallets.

PayBox is positioned as a noncustodial solution, giving users confidence they retain ultimate control over their funds. This launch builds on MoonPay’s recent efforts to integrate crypto payments into AI environments like ChatGPT and Claude, pushing the boundaries of how digital assets can be managed through conversational AI.
