Mirae Asset’s recent acquisition of a controlling stake in Korbit, one of South Korea’s earliest cryptocurrency exchanges, signals a strategic move beyond mere trading volumes. The deal, finalized with regulatory approval in July 2026, allows Mirae to integrate a fully licensed and compliant crypto exchange into its broader financial ecosystem.

What Did Mirae Actually Acquire?

On July 9, 2026, Korea’s Fair Trade Commission gave the green light for Mirae Asset to purchase 92.06% of Korbit for approximately KRW 133.5 billion (about $110 million). By July 23, Mirae increased its stake to around 91.73%, with plans to reach 97.15% ownership through additional filings. Korbit holds roughly 0.5% market share in Korea’s crypto exchange scene as of 2025, a factor the regulator cited in approving the deal without competition concerns.

Rather than buying just a brand or trading platform, Mirae acquired the entire regulated infrastructure: exchange technology, Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration, compliance systems, and the legal right to operate crypto order books within Korean regulations. This positions Mirae well to build on tokenization, create controlled crypto on/off ramps, and cross-sell crypto products to its existing brokerage and wealth management clients.

Why Target a Small Exchange?

Korbit’s modest market share actually worked in Mirae’s favor, delivering a smoother transaction with fewer regulatory hurdles and a relatively affordable price. This approach contrasts with a land grab for market dominance, focusing instead on owning compliant crypto rails that can evolve alongside Korea’s tightening financial regulations.

Once tokenized assets gain regulatory approval, Mirae can use Korbit’s infrastructure to offer brokerage-grade user experience and custody solutions to retail and wealth clients. In this context, the acquisition represents a long-term bet on crypto’s integration with traditional finance rather than an immediate push for trading volume.

This move also sets a precedent, making Mirae Asset the first Korean financial group to control a domestic crypto exchange, marking a milestone in the country's institutional crypto adoption.
