Metaplanet now counts more than 250,000 retail investors in Japan as shareholders, a 66% increase in recent months, achieved amid a broad market downturn. This means roughly 1 in every 600 people in Japan owns a stake in the company, a remarkable penetration for a publicly listed firm.

The Tokyo-based company, originally a hotel operator, shifted its focus to accumulating Bitcoin in 2024. It currently holds 40,177 BTC, ranking as the world’s third-largest corporate Bitcoin holder. Its net asset value was 457.6 billion yen as of late May 2026.

To fund its Bitcoin acquisitions, Metaplanet has employed multiple financing methods including equity raises, zero-interest bonds, and warrants. The CEO, Simon Gerovich, has set a target of reaching over one million shareholders, turning the firm into an even more widely held asset with 1 in 125 Japanese residents owning shares.

Expanding its ecosystem, Metaplanet recently acquired Siiibo Securities for 2.1 billion yen (about $13.1 million), aiming to rebrand it as Metaplanet Securities. This move is designed to simplify Bitcoin investing for retail shareholders by offering Bitcoin-linked financial products through a regulated securities firm, avoiding the complexities of direct onchain transactions.
