Nine prominent companies in the Bitcoin ecosystem have committed $15 million to a collective effort focused on strengthening Bitcoin's security against future threats. This new initiative, named the Bitcoin Security Consortium (BSC), targets post-quantum cryptography research to secure the network for years ahead.
Among the backers are heavyweights like BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Fidelity Digital Assets, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, and Galaxy. These firms, which oversee tens of billions in Bitcoin assets through ETFs and custody services, have pledged to support the development of cutting-edge security measures over the next three years.
Consortium's Mission and Structure
Unlike a centralized fund, the BSC will channel contributions directly to developers and researchers who maintain Bitcoin's open-source codebase, without attempting to control development or protocol decisions. Mike Schmidt from the nonprofit Brink will manage the day-to-day operations and coordinate efforts across participants.
The consortium's goal is to back the long-term security infrastructure of Bitcoin, particularly focusing on the risks posed by advances in quantum computing, which could potentially break today's cryptographic safeguards. The group also aims to serve as a reliable source of security information for investors, media, policymakers, and the wider public.
This venture echoes previous industry-backed open-source support models but stands out due to the scale of its financial commitment and the stature of its members. With billions of dollars in Bitcoin exposure at stake, industry players are taking proactive steps to fortify the network that underpins their holdings.
The formation of the Bitcoin Security Consortium follows rising concerns about safeguarding Bitcoin’s core technology amid rapid technological changes. Such coordinated funding reflects a shift from individual to collaborative responsibility among institutional holders.
In parallel to these security efforts, some miners have recently shifted strategies from scaling volume to asset management for better profitability, highlighting evolving priorities across the Bitcoin ecosystem. Read more about this trend here.
