Kraken quietly moved into institutional crypto options, rolling out cash-settled contracts on BTC and ETH for eligible clients on Kraken Pro. Trades go through request-for-quote only for now, with weekly, monthly, quarterly and semi-annual expiries available from day one.

The contracts are European-style and linear, meaning premiums, profit and loss are all denominated in US dollars rather than in the underlying asset. Portfolio margin is on by default, so offsetting positions shrink overall margin requirements automatically. Everything sits inside a single wallet that also holds spot and futures balances, drawing on a multi-collateral pool that supports more than 30 currencies.

"The existing options market in crypto has been built for a narrow slice of the trader base," said Alexia Theodorou, Director of Derivatives at Kraken. The unified-account pitch is the clearest way Kraken is trying to stand out: clients trade options in the same account they already use for spot and futures, rather than routing through a separate venue.

Crowded field

Kraken is walking into a market where two serious rivals already have volume. Coinbase closed its $2.9 billion acquisition of Deribit in August 2025, landing direct ownership of a venue that has long handled a disproportionate share of institutional crypto options flow. CME Group runs CFTC-regulated, centrally cleared BTC and ETH options, and in May 2026 extended trading to weekends, narrowing one of the last structural gaps between regulated derivatives and round-the-clock crypto trading.

Kraken's structure differs from both. It is not a standalone options venue and not a separately acquired platform. Whether that integrated design appeals to institutions comfortable with Deribit or CME's dedicated infrastructure remains an open question.

A public order book is on the roadmap, intended to follow once RFQ activity builds enough critical mass for price discovery. European access and additional underlying assets are planned but carry no firm date. Kraken has not disclosed which clients qualify for the product or how eligibility is determined.
