Kenya's National Examinations Council launched a blockchain system on Avalanche this month to verify academic credentials instantly. The move targets rampant certificate forgery that has plagued employers and universities for years. Nearly 15 million historical exam records are already anchored on chain, with the total expected to hit 35 million as more institutions upload their archives.

The shift from paper-based verification to digital proof changes everything for hiring. An employer can now confirm a candidate's KCSE exam results in seconds instead of submitting written requests and waiting months for manual file searches. Almost a million 2025 certificates are available only through the secure portal, forcing the shift immediately.

Forged credentials have been cheap and easy to create. A fraudster would photocopy a legitimate certificate, alter the name or exam score, and slip it past a recruiter who had no fast way to cross-check. The old backup systems relied on QR codes that could be copied or printed documents stored in separate institutional databases. Blockchain makes that impossible. Once a record is anchored, it cannot be altered or duplicated.

KNEC built the platform with a local Kenyan provider, keeping infrastructure and control inside the country. Avalanche's C-Chain handles the verification layer, storing records that date back to 1989. The system processes millions of new digital certificates each year as students complete national exams, creating a living database rather than a static archive.
