KB Kookmin Bank is set to become the first South Korean bank to implement J.P. Morgan’s Kinexys blockchain payment network for cross-border corporate transactions. The bank plans to launch this new service next month, initially enabling U.S. dollar transfers across ten countries through its branches in South Korea and Singapore.
The countries involved at launch include the United States, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and South Africa. This initiative marks a significant step beyond traditional settlement systems, offering near real-time, programmable payments on a blockchain infrastructure designed for institutional clients.
Kinexys, J.P. Morgan’s blockchain business unit, specializes in streamlining payments through asset tokenization and instant settlement capabilities. By adopting Kinexys, KB Kookmin Bank’s corporate customers will access a more efficient way to process international trade payments via blockchain technology.
This rollout follows the bank’s earlier forays into blockchain, including a $100 million digital bond issuance completed in June, which was the first blockchain-based foreign currency fundraising by a South Korean bank. also KB Kookmin Bank has explored stablecoin payment cards in partnership with Avalanche, illustrating its broadening blockchain strategy across various finance sectors rather than limiting efforts to trials.
The exact transaction limits or the types of businesses eligible in the initial phase haven’t been disclosed, nor is it clear if the service will expand to other currencies or markets beyond the first ten countries. Nevertheless, this move signals growing confidence in blockchain’s potential to enhance corporate payment infrastructure.
