Italy's largest bank just made a dramatic pivot. Intesa Sanpaolo's Bitcoin ETF holdings collapsed in the second quarter, plummeting 93.7% from 646,809 shares down to just 40,723. The move signals a sharp retreat from direct Bitcoin exposure.
The shift extends beyond simple selling. The bank's call option position on Bitcoin ETFs evaporated almost entirely, dropping 99.3% from 2.5 million underlying shares to a mere 18,000. Meanwhile, a fresh put option position materialized in the June filing, covering 500,000 underlying shares. These derivative moves suggest hedging rather than casual trimming.
The Ethereum Play Takes Center Stage
While Bitcoin got abandoned, staked Ethereum ETFs became the bank's focus. Holdings roughly tripled, jumping from 116,200 shares to 349,600 in a single quarter. This isn't passive accumulation. The bank is actively betting on Ethereum's proof-of-stake economics, where validators earn rewards.
The timing matters. Staking has matured significantly since Ethereum's Shanghai upgrade, making yield-bearing crypto assets more palatable to institutional players. Intesa's move suggests major financial players are starting to view staked tokens differently from raw cryptocurrency exposure.
What Markets Are Reading Into This
Traders and analysts are parsing these moves carefully. The Bitcoin position collapse is stark enough to signal either a fundamental shift in the bank's crypto thesis or a reallocation driven by performance and risk metrics. The emergence of put options adds complexity, hinting at portfolio hedging rather than outright bearishness.
The Ethereum pivot is bolder. By tripling staked ETH exposure, Intesa is essentially saying that productive crypto assets those generating yield fit better within traditional banking risk frameworks than pure speculative holdings. Other institutions are watching these moves closely as signals of where institutional capital might flow next.
The bank's quarterly filings rarely move markets directly, but when the largest bank in Italy reshuffles its crypto portfolio this aggressively, it catches attention. Whether this reflects broader institutional sentiment or Intesa's unique risk appetite will become clearer as other major players file their own positions.
