IBM stock dropped 2.25% to close at $205.77 after the company announced a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, then slid another notch to $200.81, down 2.50%, in pre-market trading. The market's reaction was cool even as IBM framed the deal as a long-term bet on quantum computing dominance.
HRL Laboratories is a private R&D firm jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors. Both companies will keep collaborating with IBM once the transaction closes. IBM did not disclose the purchase price, and the deal still needs to clear customary regulatory hurdles. The company expects to wrap things up before the end of Q3 2026.
The strategic logic centers on silicon spin qubits. HRL has spent years engineering that particular qubit architecture, which differs from the superconducting qubits IBM has built its existing quantum computers around. Combining the two research streams could give IBM a much wider toolkit for building future quantum platforms. HRL also brings hands-on experience in cryogenics, control electronics, qubit packaging, and interconnect technologies, all of which matter enormously when you're trying to scale quantum systems beyond a few hundred qubits.
From sensing to advanced materials
IBM intends to put HRL's expertise to work in quantum sensing and quantum networking, not just computing. HRL's advanced materials research could improve semiconductor performance and sharpen sensor sensitivity in fields like healthcare, navigation, defense, and scientific discovery. That's a broader footprint than pure quantum computing, and it's part of why IBM is calling this a strategic expansion rather than a straightforward technology purchase.
HRL also contributes know-how in high-speed electronics, advanced manufacturing, and communications systems serving both commercial and government clients. IBM sees those capabilities feeding into next-generation computing infrastructure beyond the quantum lab.
On the hardware roadmap, IBM is targeting IBM Quantum Starling for 2029. The company projects that system will execute 100 million quantum operations, a performance level that would leave today's quantum machines far behind. A follow-on system, Blue Jay, is planned for after Starling, though a launch window has not been publicly confirmed. Integrating HRL's silicon spin qubit research is now part of the path toward both milestones.
