“This move signals possible shifts ahead,” commented a market analyst on the sudden unstaking of nearly $300 million worth of HYPE tokens by major crypto venture capital firms Paradigm and Multicoin Capital. The token plummeted below $60 as traders reacted to the possibility of increased selling pressure unleashed by the release of these locked assets.
Over two days, these investors withdrew around 2.92 million HYPE tokens from staking contracts valued at $170 million by Paradigm on July 24 and 1.96 million tokens worth about $120 million by Multicoin Capital just two days earlier. Multicoin assured the community this was simply a wallet rotation, not a sale, while Paradigm has remained silent. Yet the market responded sharply, with the token’s price sliding some 25% from its June peak of $76.70, as the prospect of a large supply hitting the market loomed.
Unstaking effectively frees tokens from an eight-month lockup, allowing them to be transferred and potentially sold. Since the combined unstaked amount represents nearly 85% of the token’s daily trading volume, even a partial movement of these tokens onto exchanges could saturate the order books and push prices down. Adding to concerns, another significant HYPE token unlock is scheduled for early August, which could exacerbate supply pressure.
Hyperliquid’s recent surge into the top 10 cryptocurrencies gave these developments outsized importance. Market watchers will closely track how much of the unlocked stake actually reaches trading venues. Meanwhile, the token fluctuated between $57 and $59, signaling a market grappling with uncertainty over what these massive unstaking moves might trigger.
