As of July 22, 2026, Hashi testnet is officially running on Sui's network, and more than 25 partners can start building and stress-testing Bitcoin-backed financial applications right now, ahead of mainnet. The launch took place in Grand Cayman and marks the first time developers, custodians, and capital markets participants have a live environment to validate integrations with native BTC collateral.

The timing matters. Bitcoin's market cap crossed $1 trillion on the back of its store-of-value reputation alone, yet the vast majority of that capital sits idle. Spot ETFs and corporate treasury strategies pulled institutions closer to BTC, but the infrastructure to put native Bitcoin to work in transparent, programmable credit markets simply didn't exist before today.

Guardian Layer and the tax question

Alongside the testnet launch, Hashi introduced the Guardian Layer, a defense-in-depth security architecture built specifically to help institutions manage Bitcoin collateral without sacrificing the transparency or programmability that onchain finance requires. The idea is to let BTC move from passive holding into active use: lending, borrowing, yield strategies, and institutional credit products, all on Sui.

One practical obstacle for institutions has always been tax exposure. Moving native BTC into onchain markets could, in theory, trigger taxable events. Fenwick, one of the most prominent law firms in the digital assets space, reviewed Hashi's deposit and redemption mechanics and concluded they should not constitute taxable events under U.S. tax law. That opinion removes a significant friction point for institutional participants who were watching from the sidelines.

Adeniyi Abiodun, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Mysten Labs, the original contributor to Sui, put it plainly: every major asset class eventually develops deep credit, lending, and liquidity markets, and Bitcoin is no different. Hashi is the infrastructure layer meant to make those markets real.

Developer SDK documentation, an integration guide, and technical resources are already live at sui.io/hashi. Builders don't need to wait for mainnet to start preparing production-ready applications.
