Flow Traders has signed on as the pilot partner for Lombard Finance's new Bitcoin Onchain Credit Strategy, gaining the ability to borrow stablecoins against BTC collateral without touching traditional lending rails. The Amsterdam-listed trading firm and market maker will use Lombard's infrastructure to reach on-chain markets that have historically been off-limits for regulated institutions.
The mechanics matter here. Lombard departs from the standard DeFi model where collateral gets pooled alongside everyone else's funds. Shared pools carry well-known risks: utilization crunches, liquidity gaps, and the ever-present threat of a targeted drain. Instead, Flow Traders will post collateral in an isolated placement tracked through the Cap lending market, keeping its exposure separate from retail and other institutional positions.
Why Ethereum, not Bitcoin
The strategy runs on Ethereum, not Bitcoin's own network, and the reason is straightforward: stablecoin liquidity barely exists on Bitcoin itself. Lombard connects the dots using Chainlink's CCIP protocol, which moves BTC.b collateral from Avalanche across to Ethereum, where the deepest stablecoin pools sit. Cross-chain bridging adds a step, but it unlocks the liquidity that makes the whole structure worth building.
Lombard has also opened a parallel Bitcoin Earn program for retail and institutional clients who want exposure to the same BTC lending strategy without being a direct borrower.
Jacob Phillips, co-founder and CEO of Lombard, put it plainly: asset managers have had a persistent need to borrow stablecoins, but DeFi was never structured in a way they could actually use. Separating the borrower from the collateral provider is what finally makes it workable for a regulated trading firm. Flow Traders manages roughly $10 billion in daily trading volume across global markets, which gives the pilot real weight as a proof of concept for institutional on-chain credit.
