Three Apple customers filed a lawsuit after losing a total of $1.8 million to a fraudulent Bitcoin wallet app posing as Sparrow Wallet on the App Store. The victims entered their seed phrases into the fake app, allowing scammers to steal their funds.
The case, initiated last week in California’s Northern District Court, accuses Apple of negligence and failing to prevent impersonation scams despite its claims that the App Store is a secure platform. Plaintiffs James Ramirez, Christopher Ellis, and Jalen Delgado lost around $875,000, $840,000, and $120,000 respectively during 2025.
App Store Oversight Under Fire
Sparrow Wallet does not have an official iOS version and is only supported on desktop systems. This made it an easy target for scammers who managed to sneak the counterfeit app past Apple’s review procedures. Apple responded by removing the fraudulent apps and terminating developer accounts associated with the scam, confirming no copies currently exist on the store.
Alongside the lawsuit, this incident raises questions about the level of app security and Apple’s capacity to protect users from sophisticated crypto scams. The plaintiffs argue Apple failed to warn users or detect the fraudulent wallet, exposing a significant vulnerability within its tightly controlled ecosystem.
