Emirates has taken a bold step, allowing travelers in the UAE to pay for flights with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The airline, known for its global reach and luxury service, teamed up with Crypto.com to enable this new payment mode finally fulfilling a promise teased back in 2022.
Crypto Payments Hit Emirates Booking Platform
Starting now, residents in the UAE with Crypto.com accounts can use the platform’s payment feature when buying flights on emirates.com or via the Emirates app. This integration channels payments through Crypto.com’s Dubai-licensed arm, which holds a rare Stored Value Facilities license granted by the Central Bank of the UAE the first virtual asset service provider to secure such certification locally.
Driving Dubai's Cashless Vision
This move aligns with Dubai’s ambitious goal to digitize 90% of transactions in both government and private sectors by the end of 2026 as part of its D33 Economic Agenda. Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, Adnan Kazim, highlighted that this reflects the changing habits of digitally savvy younger travelers who expect smooth mobile-first experiences. The launch follows Emirates’ earlier attempts to boost digital payments in partnership with Dubai Finance and dovetails with Crypto.com’s recent deal to accept digital payments for government services.
The new crypto payment option currently only applies to bookings settled in Emirati Dirhams and made by eligible UAE residents, but it opens doors to broader adoption as digital assets become more mainstream. Such moves shows Dubai’s commitment to fostering a forward-thinking financial ecosystem, outpacing many other global hubs in crypto integration.
