Emirates Airlines has opened a new payment frontier by integrating Crypto.com Pay, allowing customers in the UAE to pay for flights with cryptocurrencies while the airline receives money in UAE dirhams. This launch aligns with Dubai’s push towards a cashless economy and caters to tech-savvy travelers who prefer digital wallets over traditional payment methods.
How Crypto Payments Work with Emirates
Passengers booking flights via the emirates.com website or the Emirates app can select Crypto.com Pay at checkout. Payments are then completed through their Crypto.com wallet on mobile or by scanning a QR code. While customers transact in crypto, the airline settles amounts in AED, ensuring compliance with local regulations.
Crypto.com’s UAE entity, Foris DAX Middle East FZE, has been licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE to provide Stored Value Facilities, enabling secure crypto payments. This regulatory approval was key in bringing this initiative to life, reflecting the UAE's ambitions to lead in fintech innovation.
Industry Impact and Future Outlook
Adnan Kazim, Emirates Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the rapid progress from signing the deal to launch in under a year, emphasizing the favorable regulatory landscape that supports fintech development. Eric Anziani, Crypto.com’s President and COO, called the partnership a significant milestone, underlining the UAE's commitment to embracing forward-thinking digital solutions.
This step by Emirates adds momentum to the growing trend of crypto adoption in mainstream commerce and travel. It provides a smooth experience for crypto users and could encourage other airlines to explore similar payment options.
