Emerald AI is gearing up for a $100 million funding round that could push its valuation beyond $1 billion, marking a bold move to disrupt Nvidia's dominance in AI infrastructure. Founded in 2024 by Varun Sivaram, the startup focuses on turning data centers into adaptable energy assets, optimizing their power usage to align with grid demands.
Their software operates above the hardware layer, orchestrating energy consumption in real time to help AI facilities adjust dynamically. This capability is especially key as data centers face increasing pressure to manage energy efficiently amid growing AI workloads.
Collaborating with the giant they aim to challenge
Interestingly, Nvidia’s own venture capital arm has backed Emerald AI through earlier funding rounds, reflecting a complex relationship between the two. Emerald AI has partnered directly with Nvidia on projects like the 96 MW Aurora data center and joint efforts to develop grid-friendly AI factory designs introduced this year.
So far, Emerald AI has secured between $68 million and $75 million in total funding. Their seed round in July 2025 brought in $24.5 million, followed by a $25 million strategic investment in March 2026. Unlike many tech startups dabbling in crypto or blockchain, Emerald AI’s approach centers purely on energy orchestration without token involvement.
This push into flexible, grid-responsive AI infrastructure comes as data centers worldwide grapple with ballooning energy costs and sustainability pressures. Emerald AI’s technology could help facilities reduce peak demand charges and integrate renewable power sources more effectively.
