El Salvador keeps accumulating Bitcoin steadily, adding about one coin daily despite growing political uncertainty. The government’s commitment to its crypto strategy is now under the spotlight as opposition parties prepare for the 2027 presidential election.
Quiet Accumulation Amid Political Tensions
Since adopting Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, El Salvador has been steadily increasing its BTC reserves through the National Bitcoin Office. This office acts quietly, buying coins one by one, even as Bitcoin prices hit multi-month lows. However, the government’s approach has stirred controversy domestically. Opposition candidates who have officially entered the race for the 2027 presidency have begun questioning the viability of the crypto policy, making it a central issue in upcoming campaigns.
The country’s Bitcoin holdings now stand at approximately $600 million, reflecting a substantial stake in the cryptocurrency despite price volatility. These purchases come as Bitcoin prices fluctuate dramatically, testing El Salvador’s long-term gamble. With the presidential vote approaching, the continuation of this crypto-centric economic policy is anything but certain.
