Three recent DeFi hacks have resulted in losses totaling over $35 million, reigniting fears of another downturn in decentralized finance security. The biggest hit came from AFX, where attackers drained $24.2 million in USDC from its Arbitrum bridge, transferring the stolen funds to Ethereum.
Alongside AFX, BSquared Network lost approximately $3.9 million after 8.6 million B2 tokens were siphoned off, while VerusCoin faced a bridge exploit costing around $7.5 million. Together, these incidents highlight a recurring weak point: cross-chain bridges. Despite operating across different ecosystems, the attacks exploited the same vulnerability, underscoring ongoing security challenges in DeFi infrastructure.
Bridge Exploits and Market Impact
This wave of hacks comes at a delicate moment. Earlier this year, the Drift Protocol was hit by a massive $285 million exploit that rocked the sector. Recently, the hacker behind that breach began moving stolen ETH through Tornado Cash in batches of 100 ETH, executing multiple transactions every minute. While this movement doesn’t indicate an immediate selloff, it adds to the unease surrounding DeFi's security landscape.
DeFi had just started to bounce back, with total value locked (TVL) increasing by over $10 billion in July the strongest growth since the hack spree in the first half of the year. However, these new losses strain that recovery and could prompt a shift from capital inflows back to risk aversion, especially if further exploits occur.
Recurring Vulnerabilities in DeFi
The repeated targeting of cross-chain bridges is a glaring concern. These bridges facilitate asset transfers between blockchains but remain the sector’s Achilles’ heel. The recent attacks on AFX, BSquared Network, and VerusCoin all exploited this vector, showing that despite improvements, bridge security has not kept pace with DeFi’s expansion.
The timing of these events also overlaps with heightened attention on market movements sparked by exchange listings, as traders weigh the impact of these security incidents against DeFi’s growth prospects. The sector now faces a critical test: can it strengthen its defenses before another wave of hacks triggers widespread selloffs?
