K Wave Media decided to move away from its Bitcoin treasury strategy in May, redirecting up to $485 million toward data centres, GPU rentals, and AI projects. The plan also involved shedding legacy units and cutting $48 million in debt. Yet, the shift failed to restore investor confidence as K Wave’s shares plunged roughly 71% since the pivot. This reflects wider struggles for companies built on the digital asset treasury (DAT) model, which are battling dwindling crypto prices and shrinking premiums.
Several crypto treasury firms are scrambling to reinvent themselves by embracing artificial intelligence and data infrastructure. These changes come as the typical structure where firms buy cryptocurrencies with public or private funds, relying on a premium over token holdings to fuel further acquisitions loses its edge. When crypto markets fall, the model suffers because share sales become less appealing and debt costs stay high.
The pressure is mounting. VanEck noted in January that discounted net asset values are forcing many firms to consolidate or seek new directions. Renno & Co’s managing partner Toufic Adlouni went further, describing the fate of these companies as: “the vast majority are trying to switch gears or are dead or dying.”
Lixte Biotechnology and Alpha Compute made public moves entering new industries after experiencing share drops exceeding 30%, reflecting investor skepticism about these pivots. For example, Lixte acquired 10.5 BTC and 300 ETH in 2025 before attempting a business shift. None of the companies have yet shown their AI-related ventures can generate returns comparable to their former crypto holdings.
The failing performance of crypto treasury stocks underlines how heavily investor sentiment depends on the underlying crypto asset markets. K Wave’s divestiture of its remaining 88 BTC to reduce $6 million of debt further signals the abandonment of its original crypto accumulation plan.
Shares of companies trying to reinvent themselves this way continue to slide despite their efforts, illustrating the difficult path ahead for those caught in the declining crypto treasury landscape.
