Data from CoinGlass reveals that Bitcoin's price on Coinbase has been consistently lower than on Binance for 75 days straight, stretching from May 19 to August 1. This sets a new all-time record for the Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index, which measures the price difference between the two exchanges. The index hit a negative peak of -0.0959%, signifying that Coinbase's Bitcoin price lagged Binance's for more than two and a half months.
Before this, the longest stretch of negative premium lasted just 40 days, between January 16 and February 24, showing that the current streak nearly doubled previous records. The recent decline also overshadows the roughly 30-day negative period experienced during last year’s October 10 market crash.
What the Negative Premium Means
The Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index tracks the price gap between Coinbase Pro, which primarily serves US investors, and Binance, a global platform. A negative reading indicates weakening demand or growing sell pressure in the US Bitcoin market relative to international activity. Still, experts caution against interpreting this alone as a mass exodus of US institutional investors or a capital outflow from the country. Factors like liquidity disparities, differing trading hours, and user base profiles across regions can all influence the index.
Market watchers will be paying close attention to see if this record negative premium triggers arbitrage opportunities or signals broader shifts in investor behavior.
