Coinbase's shares dropped about 5% after hours following a second quarter report that showed a loss of $1.36 per share and revenue decline to $1.2 billion from $1.5 billion a year earlier. Despite those disappointing numbers, the exchange hit a milestone by capturing a record 10.3% of global crypto trading volume, up from 9.1% in the previous quarter.

Market Share Growth Amid Challenging Conditions

Even as overall crypto market volumes declined by double digits, Coinbase managed to grow its footprint. Derivatives trading held steady near record levels, with revenue from event contracts doubling quarter-over-quarter to surpass a $100 million annualized run rate. Stablecoins also contributed significantly to growth. Coinbase’s average USDC holdings reached $20 billion, representing over 30% of the stablecoin’s circulating supply. The company and its partners accounted for 79% of the $37 trillion stablecoin transaction volume recorded this year. stablecoin transactions on Coinbase’s Base network increased sevenfold compared to last year.

Diversification Beyond Bitcoin Spot Trading

Coinbase is steadily reducing reliance on Bitcoin spot trading. Non-Bitcoin spot revenue made up 88% of net revenue in the quarter. Subscription and services revenue climbed sharply to $555 million, up from just $6 million in Q2 2020, now accounting for 48% of net revenue versus 29% in late 2024. This shift reflects growing demand for Coinbase’s broader offerings beyond the traditional crypto exchange model.

Operationally, Coinbase posted its 14th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA and lowered its full-year adjusted expense guidance. The company credits increased use of artificial intelligence for boosting engineering efficiency, with code changes per engineer more than doubling year-over-year and integration test coverage rising 2.5 times over six months.

The results come despite the broader crypto market’s struggles and illustrate Coinbase’s ongoing transformation into a more diversified crypto services platform. However, the quarterly loss and revenue dip continue to pressure the stock, as seen in its post-earnings drop.
