Imagine an AI agent managing your business payments automatically. That’s now a reality after Coinbase launched USDC payment capabilities specifically for autonomous AI agents through its business platform. Starting this week, businesses can accept USDC from AI agents, streamlining transactions that used to require human approval.
On July 23, 2026, Coinbase rolled out new tools allowing AI agents to perform payments, trading commands, and real-time monitoring. This development comes amid a surge in automated web traffic. Last month, automated visits on Coinbase’s Base pages surpassed human visits for the first time, underscoring the need for payment systems that work independently without manual oversight.
All transactions made by AI agents are processed through Coinbase’s payment infrastructure, which supports the x402 payment protocol. This setup is designed for pay-per-use internet transactions, enabling businesses to receive, track, and cash out USDC funds via one consolidated account. Coinbase also offers a competitive annual reward of around 3.35% on USDC balances held within these accounts, although rates may differ by region.
One key benefit is that USDC payments processed through this system carry no risk of chargebacks, as Coinbase does not intervene in direct transactions between businesses and their customers. Access to these features depends on service availability, user location, and platform compliance.
To give users more control, Coinbase’s update added functions for agents to stream order data, analyze order books, and set conditional trading actions like automatic buying, selling, or order cancellations based on market conditions.
The new functionality builds on the x402 Developer Kit released by Coinbase’s Developer Platform. This kit simplifies integration by combining payment infrastructure and additional features into one package, reducing the need for complex middleware configurations. The x402 protocol utilizes the HTTP 402 Payment Required code, allowing services to request payments from AI agents and verify those payments smoothly.
Coinbase first introduced the open x402 standard back in May 2025 to facilitate stablecoin payments within APIs, apps, and autonomous agents by bundling payment requests, authorizations, and confirmations into a single process. Amazon also integrated the x402 protocol into its Bedrock Agent Core Payments platform in May 2026, enabling compatible AI agents to use USDC tokens for purchases.
This move by Coinbase reflects broader trends among tech giants embracing stablecoins and AI automation. For context, Samsung announced plans to integrate stablecoins like USDC into its wallet recently, signaling wider adoption of digital currencies in daily transactions.
