Coinbase rolled out new features this week allowing its Business customers to accept payments from AI agents using USDC stablecoins via the x402 protocol. This update simplifies transactions between autonomous agents and online services, treating AI agents like human users in terms of payments.
Payments Meet Automation with x402
The x402 standard, launched by Coinbase in May 2025, enables stablecoin payments over HTTP. That means AI agents can complete purchases smoothly, without businesses needing extra setup. Sid Coelho-Prabhu, head of Coinbase Business, called this "building the checkout experience for the agentic economy." With this, AI agents can create wallets, read API documentation, and start paying instantly, just like a customer using a credit card does today.
Payments flow through Coinbase Payments and settle in USDC, allowing merchants to accept funds without custom infrastructure. The innovation responds to a shift in the internet's financial ecosystem, where agent-driven activity now outpaces human browsing. Last month, Coinbase saw agent-generated traffic on its Base documentation surpass human visits for the first time.
On top of that, Coinbase released AI trading tools that let users set natural language orders such as “buy ETH if it dips 5%.” This puts institutional-grade market monitoring at the fingertips of regular traders. Developers also benefit from a new x402 SDK that integrates payment acceptance into any API or web service with three lines of code, lowering barriers for AI payment integration.
As stablecoins increasingly become the financial layer for AI-powered operations online, Coinbase’s move fits a broader industry trend. The company hasn’t shared additional pricing details beyond standard Coinbase Payments fees.
Within days of launch, AI agent traffic growth underlined the shift: agent activity on Coinbase’s developer platform is now surpassing human engagement, signaling a new normal for how money moves online.
