Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong publicly supported Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s inaugural tweet, endorsing a move toward open-weight AI models. Armstrong believes these models could surpass the performance of closed frontier AI systems within corporate environments.
Backing Open AI for Enterprise Innovation
Huang’s first post shared an open letter titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership," which Nvidia co-signed alongside major tech players like Meta, Microsoft, and IBM. The letter emphasizes that open-weight AI is essential for broadening access, sparking competition, and ensuring the United States stays at the forefront of AI innovation.
Armstrong highlighted that Coinbase is already shifting more of its operational workloads to open-weight AI frameworks. He stated that a model honed on Coinbase’s own data specifically 100,000 internal compliance cases might outperform generalized frontier models in specialized regulatory roles.
This perspective aligns with Huang’s analogy comparing the rise of open AI models today to the open-source software movement of the 1980s, which laid the groundwork for rapid technological advancement. Despite acknowledging risks like potential misuse, the letter argues that openness fosters better security by inviting experts to establish safeguards.
The call for open AI has also gained traction from other tech leaders, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Jack Dorsey, all of whom voiced their support for Huang’s vision. Musk emphasized full endorsement, Altman stressed the importance of US leadership in both proprietary and open development, and Dorsey praised the initiative as "excellent." This collective backing marks a growing trend toward collaborative AI development among industry titans.
