Cloudflare handles roughly one-fifth of all internet traffic. When infrastructure at that scale shifts, it reshapes how the web actually works. On August 4, during Agents Week, the company launched Cloudflare Wallets, turning a theoretical question into working code: AI agents can now spend money on their own.
The industry has been chasing this moment for months. OpenAI pulled back on Instant Checkout in ChatGPT earlier this year, exposing a real friction point. Users wanted AI to help them find things, but they wanted to buy on their own terms. Meanwhile, the x402 protocol was mostly theater 95% of volume was just signaling intent, with actual daily commerce stuck around $28,000. Cloudflare's move targets that exact gap between what the protocol promises and what actually happens in commerce.
The wallets let people hold stablecoins and, more crucially, spin up Virtual Wallets for their AI agents. Those agents can now autonomously purchase APIs, MCP tools, and content. Everything ties back to cloudflare.pay, which anchors wallets to Cloudflare accounts and gives agents readable identities like research.example.cloudflare.pay. A merchant receiving a request knows exactly what agent is asking.
Stablecoins at the Edge
The architecture ditches traditional card networks for stablecoins from the start. Using the x402 protocol, Cloudflare settles transactions on Base or Solana in roughly two seconds, happening at the CDN layer itself. That bypasses the delays and fees of legacy banking. As a Premier member of the x402 Foundation alongside Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe, Cloudflare is positioning itself as the core infrastructure for machine-to-machine commerce.
This completes the two-sided market Cloudflare began building in July. The Monetization Gateway let customer sites sell resources directly to AI buyers without human intermediaries. Today's wallet launch fills the other side: now those buyers have pockets. Every customer resource becomes a micro-merchant, and agents get the ability to pay. The plumbing for automated commerce is finally connected.
