Citadel has stepped in to acquire a significant stock portfolio from Situational Awareness LP, the AI-focused fund led by Leopold Aschenbrenner. Known for explosive returns exceeding 1,000% since its inception, Situational Awareness recently suffered notable losses on certain AI bets, highlighting the sector's volatile nature.

Founded in late 2024 by Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, Situational Awareness grew rapidly, managing over $20 billion by mid-2026. The fund posted an eye-popping 439% gain in the first half of 2026 alone, with its latest 13F filing revealing $13.7 billion in equities. The holdings centered heavily on AI infrastructure names such as Bloom Energy and Nvidia, alongside crypto mining companies. Earlier filings showed the fund’s strategy of going long on AI backbone companies while hedging semiconductor exposure through puts.

Why Citadel Is Buying These Positions

Citadel’s multi-strategy platform and deep risk controls enable it to absorb complex and concentrated positions that might be too risky for younger funds during downturns. By offloading part of its portfolio to Citadel, Situational Awareness frees capital, reduces concentration risk, and potentially secures profits on positions that once soared but have recently been hit hard.

Situational Awareness’s holdings also offer insight into where smart money believes AI value lies today. Its stake in Bloom Energy, for example, suggests a bet beyond just software and chips, focusing on the physical infrastructure needed for AI’s expansion.
