On July 30, 2026, Citadel Securities stepped in to buy the public stock holdings of Situational Awareness LP for $10 billion, rescuing the AI-focused hedge fund from a liquidity crunch. This move came after the fund, founded by ex-OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, faced steep losses on its leveraged bets in AI infrastructure.
Situational Awareness grew explosively since its 2024 launch, backed by big names like the Collison brothers and Nat Friedman. At its peak, the fund managed almost $45 billion, investing heavily in data centers, power suppliers, semiconductor makers, and Bitcoin miners shifting toward AI workloads.
However, the fund’s aggressive use strategy became its Achilles’ heel. As AI stocks tumbled mid-2026, margin calls piled up, forcing a fire sale. The publicly traded equity slice, estimated between $10 billion and $16 billion, was central to the crisis. Citadel acquired not only the stocks but also the debt tied to these leveraged positions.
Among the notable assets were Bitcoin miners Core Scientific (CORZ) and Iris Energy (IREN), each pivoting into high-performance computing for AI tasks. These miners alone accounted for roughly $1 billion within a broader $5.5 billion equity portfolio. The collapse of these holdings dragged the fund’s assets under management down to just over $20 billion before the sale.
Citadel’s purchase offers Situational Awareness a way to manage its losses and avoid a sudden collapse. For a fund squeezed by margin calls and a slumping net asset value, the alternatives were selling assets at steep discounts or entering complex negotiations. This bailout reflects the risks embedded in betting heavily on AI infrastructure amid volatile markets.
