Shares of Circle Internet Group jumped more than 2% following the company’s announcement of acquiring a vast portfolio of blockchain-related patents from IBM. The deal includes nearly 1,000 issued patents across more than 680 patent families worldwide, covering technologies that range from blockchain infrastructure and banking to secure cloud operations and supply chain verification.
Circle closed the trading day at $63.83, up $1.41 from the previous session. The stock initially surged past $66 in early trading before settling into a range near $64. The acquisition solidifies Circle’s position as the leading holder of blockchain patents in the U.S., enabling it to bolster its products like the USDC stablecoin, Circle Payments Network, and Arc’s agentic financial tools.
Sarah Wilson, Circle’s General Counsel, emphasized that expanding the company’s intellectual property is key to advancing onchain infrastructure adoption. The new patents enhance Circle’s ability to innovate in internet-based financial systems, although they do not grant exclusive rights to blockchain technology as a whole. Competitors remain free to build technologies that avoid infringing on the specific patent claims acquired.
While Circle hasn’t mentioned plans to launch lawsuits or a licensing program, the move clearly aims to protect and strengthen its core technology stack. By adding these patents, Circle gains both defensive use and a broader base to develop new blockchain solutions with greater security and efficiency.
