Circle took a big step in expanding its digital asset reach by acquiring close to 1,000 blockchain patents from IBM. The patents cover 680 families and make Circle one of the top holders of blockchain intellectual property both in the U.S. and worldwide.

Dominating the Blockchain Patent Landscape

The acquisition accounts for nearly 70% of IBM's blockchain patent portfolio. IBM, which has long been a pioneer in blockchain technology, held around 1,450 patents in this field, peaking with over 500 filings in 2018 and 2019. Their focus later shifted to fewer but more monetizable patents. Circle’s acquisition not only gives it control over a large chunk of IBM’s blockchain IP but also adds significant strength to its internet financial infrastructure, including the stablecoin USDC, Circle Payments, Arc platform, and other onchain initiatives.

Strategic Impact and Future Prospects

Sarah Wilson, Circle's General Counsel, emphasized that intellectual property plays a key role in promoting onchain infrastructure adoption globally. While the financial details remain under wraps, Circle and IBM are already discussing further collaborations and potential additional purchases connected to IBM's patent assets. This move signals Circle's ambition to push internet-native finance further, backed by some of the industry's most important blockchain technologies.
