Chainlink has launched its Time-Weighted Average Price (TWAP) feeds on mainnet, offering developers more reliable pricing data that cuts down on manipulation risks. The upgrade went live on July 31st, providing two distinct feed options: a 30-second and a 60-second window. This marks a significant step for DeFi projects needing price data that reflects market conditions over time rather than relying on vulnerable single snapshots.
How TWAP feeds improve pricing security and usability
Traditional price feeds can be gamed by traders willing to push asset prices briefly before settlement, leading to unfair outcomes. TWAP feeds change the game by averaging prices across a set interval, requiring malicious actors to sustain price distortions over the entire window a far more costly and complex task. Developers familiar with Chainlink Data Streams can access these feeds immediately using existing credentials, with pricing starting at $150 per month for select options. Polymarket, a prediction market platform, is the first to adopt them, shifting its crypto up/down markets to TWAP-based settlement starting August 7.
Polymarket’s rollout and Chainlink’s evolving data ecosystem
Polymarket will use the 30-second TWAP feeds for 5-minute markets and 60-second feeds for longer 15-minute and 4-hour markets. Until the launch of a Real-Time Data Streaming WebSocket on August 4, the platform will treat this period as a calibration phase, adjusting feeds as needed. To encourage liquidity during this transition, Polymarket is backing their affected markets with $1 million in incentives throughout August. Chainlink’s continuous rollout of solid data services follows its earlier testnet versions, giving developers ample time to integrate and prepare.
