BitMEX is closing its doors. The crypto derivatives exchange announced Thursday that its parent company, HDR Global Trading Limited, has decided to wind down operations following a strategic review of the business and the broader crypto market. Users have been told to withdraw their funds as soon as possible.

The platform, once the dominant venue for Bitcoin perpetual swaps, said services will continue as normal through September 23. After that date, BitMEX will stop operating as an exchange but will hold client assets until they are fully withdrawn. The company also confirmed it has unstaked all BMEX tokens previously locked on the platform, making them available in user accounts immediately.

A History That Was Never Quiet

BitMEX launched as a pioneer of crypto derivatives and for years sat at the center of the market, famous for its 100x use products and its co-founder Arthur Hayes, whose public persona became as well-known as the exchange itself. But the platform spent much of its later years fighting legal battles rather than capturing market share.

U.S. regulators alleged that BitMEX allowed American clients to trade without identity verification, and that senior leadership had actively altered customer data to conceal users' true locations. In 2021 the company paid $100 million in civil penalties to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed all pleaded guilty in 2022 to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act for failing to maintain an anti-money laundering program, each agreeing to a $10 million personal fine. A further $100 million penalty followed last year for the guilty plea on Bank Secrecy Act charges.

The legal saga did get one notable coda. After Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election and took office with a notably crypto-friendly posture, all three founders received pardons in 2025.

The closure announcement offered no specific reason beyond the board's strategic review, and the company's statement leaned into legacy rather than explanation: "We are proud of everything that has been built at the company since its launch as a pioneer of crypto derivatives."
