"This is the end of the road for us," one trader remarked after BitMart confirmed it will be shutting down its exchange in the coming months. The announcement came amid a severe drop in the value of its BMX token and mounting user frustrations over withdrawal delays. BitMart’s decision to close was described as a measured response to market challenges and internal reassessments of its long-term viability.
In its Sunday statement, BitMart outlined the timeline for its shutdown: all trading services will stop on August 26, with the platform fully shuttered by January 31, 2027. The exchange has already blocked new registrations and deposits. Spot markets no longer accept new orders, and futures contracts have been restricted to reduce-only mode, allowing users solely to close existing positions. Customers were urged to withdraw funds ahead of the closure, though the company warned that some withdrawal requests might undergo extra compliance checks, resulting in longer processing periods.
The impact was immediate on BMX, which tumbled roughly 70 percent over the weekend from $0.31 down to about $0.095. Traders reported delays of several hours for withdrawals of stablecoins like USDT, fueling uncertainty around the exchange’s stability. According to blockchain insights from Arkham Intelligence, BitMart-linked wallets have seen a decline in assets from approximately $102 million earlier this month to $71 million by Sunday. A large portion of these holdings is tied up in WeFi tokens, valued at around $41.5 million, while USDT balances dropped to roughly $91,000.
Adding to the confusion, several posts in the Mandarin crypto community mixed up BitMart's BMX token with BitMEX’s BMEX token, and mistakenly cited different shutdown dates. Whether this misinformation influenced BMX’s price collapse remains uncertain. BitMart joins a growing list of crypto exchanges ceasing operations recently, following moves by platforms like BitMEX and others, marking a turbulent period for the industry.
