Bitmart, a crypto exchange that has operated for nine years, announced it will shut down all trading activities by August 26, 2026. Following this news, its native token BMX plunged roughly 60%, reflecting investor concerns over the platform’s winding down.
Details of the Shutdown
The company cited a thorough review of its operational status, market challenges, and strategic outlook as reasons behind this tough decision to halt platform operations. Bitmart plans an orderly wind-down process, allowing users to settle positions, redeem items, preserve records, and withdraw funds over the coming months. Full platform closure is scheduled for January 31, 2027, at 15:59 UTC.
Restrictions started rolling out on July 26, 2026. From that date, new account registrations and cryptocurrency or fiat deposits were disabled. Spot trading no longer accepts new orders, and futures traders can only reduce or close existing positions without initiating new ones. Bitmart will also discontinue services like copy trading, grid bots, API trading, and other automated functionalities. Open orders must be canceled by users or will be canceled automatically.
Once operations cease, users will retain limited access to their accounts to retrieve transaction history and request withdrawals as per Bitmart’s established procedures. The company has promised further announcements detailing futures trade settlements, which may involve current pricing mechanisms or index prices.
Market Reaction and Industry Context
The BMX token’s dramatic 60% drop highlights the market impact of Bitmart’s exit. This closure follows closely on the heels of BitMEX shutting down after 11 years, marking two significant crypto exchange shutdowns within just four days. Such rapid changes signal turbulence in parts of the crypto exchange ecosystem.
Bitmart’s closure adds to recent trends of crypto platforms re-evaluating their futures amid shifting market conditions. For instance, Coinbase recently raised alerts around Bitcoin’s quantum security measures, showing the industry grappling with evolving technological challenges. Meanwhile, some strategies hold large Bitcoin reserves while increasing liquidity, reflecting differing approaches to navigating crypto’s volatile landscape.
