Bitcoin jumped toward $64,400 right after the Federal Reserve opted to keep interest rates steady, marking the fifth consecutive pause. The central bank maintained its benchmark rate between 3.50% and 3.75%, signaling cautious monitoring of inflation pressures.
Fed's Rate Decision Sparks Internal Debate
The Federal Open Market Committee wrapped up its July meeting with a 9-3 vote to hold rates steady. Three regional Fed presidents Neel Kashkari, Lorie Logan, and Beth Hammack favored a 25-basis-point hike, reflecting ongoing concerns about inflation. This dissent gave the vote a hawkish edge compared to a unanimous pause.
The Fed's statement noted that the economy expanded at a solid pace and job growth kept up with the workforce. Inflation remains stubbornly above the 2% target, prompting officials to stress their commitment to achieving price stability. They refrained from easing policy as inflation risks linger.
Market and Cryptocurrency Reaction After Fed Announcement
Energy prices played a key role in the Fed's cautious stance. Tensions in the Middle East pushed oil prices higher, threatening to feed into broader inflation through transport and production costs. While June's data showed consumer prices easing aided by nearly a 10% drop in gasoline prices recent oil price rebounds reignited inflation concerns.
Several Fed governors, including Lisa Cook and Chris Waller, had advocated patience, preferring to watch inflation trends before adjusting rates. However, Fed President Logan argued earlier that higher rates might be necessary to tame persisting inflation. Hammack echoed the need for action as businesses report ongoing price pressures.
Following the decision, Bitcoin quickly climbed toward $64,400, while XRP hovered near $1.08. Ethereum traded around $1,917, with Solana also active. This reaction highlights crypto markets’ sensitivity to monetary policy moves and inflation signals.
