Bitcoin’s value dropped to around $63,634, slipping 2% within 24 hours as doubts grew about whether the Clarity Act will pass before Congress heads into its August recess. At one point, Bitcoin dipped below $62,800, reflecting growing investor uncertainty amid political gridlock.
Stalled Legislation and Political Hurdles
The Clarity Act, designed to provide a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies, faces uncertain prospects despite passing the House last year with strong bipartisan backing. Currently, the bill’s chances of becoming law stand at about 35% according to predictions on crypto betting platform Polymarket. Support from powerful financial players like Fidelity and Goldman Sachs contrasts with resistance among some Democrats who argue the bill still doesn’t adequately address key ethical concerns.
Part of the delay stems from debates over stablecoin yield rules and worries from banking lobbyists who contend generous yields offered by crypto exchanges could threaten traditional bank deposits. To address these concerns, a revised version of the bill was introduced recently that prohibits government officials and their families from endorsing crypto products.
Lawmakers Race Against Time
With fewer than two weeks left before Congress’s five-week recess, supporters of the Clarity Act are pushing hard for a vote. Republicans hope to capitalize on bipartisan momentum to advance the bill, which could clarify regulatory standards and encourage growth in digital assets and blockchain technology. However, other pressing legislative priorities, such as new sanctions on Russian energy, compete for lawmakers’ attention during this packed session.
The outcome of this push will have tangible consequences for the crypto market and could set important precedents for future legislation. Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s price remains sensitive to these political developments, fluctuating as investors weigh the odds of meaningful regulatory progress.
