Binance tightened its grip on the centralized exchange market through the second quarter of 2026, capturing 38.7% of spot trading volume even as total activity across the top 10 CEXs dropped 27.9% quarter-over-quarter, per a CoinGecko report published in July. In raw numbers, that means combined spot volume fell from $2.70 trillion in Q1 to $1.95 trillion in Q2. May was the low point, with $619 billion across those exchanges, before a modest recovery to $695 billion in June.
While Binance grew its slice of a shrinking pie, the reshuffle behind it was equally notable. Bybit climbed past MEXC to claim the number-two spot by volume, though its share stood at just 10.0%, a wide gap below Binance's dominance. MEXC had a rougher quarter: its volume collapsed 56%, from $275.2 billion to $121.2 billion, pushing the exchange down to seventh place in the rankings.
MEXC's compliance hire and the Bybit connection
On July 22, MEXC announced Robert Macdonald as its new Chief Compliance Officer. Macdonald joins from Bybit, where he served as Chief Legal and Compliance Officer from 2024, overseeing KYC and AML frameworks while directing the exchange's global licensing strategy and corporate legal operations. His resume also includes senior regulatory and governance roles at Standard Chartered and Binance, making him one of the more well-traveled compliance figures in the industry.
BNB Chain bets on tokenized assets
Binance's lead is not just a trading volume story. Token Terminal data shows that Binance-issued tokenized stocks added more capital over the past month than any other issuer. Through the Stove Protocol, additional tokenized Hong Kong equities went live on BNB Chain, a move that could pull further trading activity toward the exchange's ecosystem. Analyst Ali Martinez noted on X that CEXs and traditional finance systems are converging: exchanges are pushing into equities, commodities, and tokenized funds, while banks and brokerages are quietly adopting blockchain rails. Real-world assets traded on-chain are no longer a niche corner of the market.
BNB was up roughly 2% in the hours following the CoinGecko report's wider circulation.
