Without it, Apple holds the keys and can hand material to law enforcement. By yanking the feature entirely, Apple essentially made compliance impossible.
What the UK demanded, and why it mattered globally
The original order had teeth because of its scope. UK authorities wanted access to encrypted data for users worldwide, not just Britain. That caught Washington's attention. US officials objected in August 2025, and the UK scaled back the demand to UK-based data only. But the principle remained the same: force Apple to build technical capability for decryption.
The Investigatory Powers Act, known colloquially as the "Snoopers' Charter," gives authorities this power. A Technical Capability Notice compels companies to develop tools that let law enforcement access communications. Apple has been clear on this for years: "We have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products or services and we never will."
UK iPhone users still have some protection. Fifteen default iCloud categories remain end-to-end encrypted regardless. But the optional shield is gone, and the tribunal hearing is scheduled for early 2026.
